Terrible accident in the lap of Poland, the Dutch cyclist in critical condition

Terrible accident at the end of the first stage of the Polish Round, just a few meters before the finish line. In the final moment of the race, when the cyclists were pedaling with all their might to cross the first line, Dylan Groenewegen causes a collective crash, but worse than the others suffers the Dutchman Fabio Jakobsen, who has undergone a long operation of five hours, to restore broken bones in place.

The 23-year-old is in serious condition, but doctors are optimistic and give positive news about a stable clinical situation of the injured.

“The intervention was difficult,” said Pawel Gruenpeter, deputy director of Katowice City Hospital. “There is no danger to life, but his condition remains serious.”

The Deceuninck Quick-Step team, for which Jakobsen competed, has announced that there are no injuries to the brain or spine of the Dutch cyclist and that doctors have tried to get him out of the coma.

According to race doctor Barbara Jerschina, three other cyclists have been hospitalized: Damien Touze, Marc Sarreau and Eduard Prades. A Polish official who was hit by Jakobsen also received help at the hospital.
